Helping Families & Businesses Make Confident Decisions

Thousands of clients have trusted Weeks Insurance Group to guide them through important coverage decisions — and we’d be honored to help you too.

Before You Join Your Spouse’s Plan, Know Your Options.

Adding a spouse to an employer-sponsored health plan can sometimes significantly increase the monthly premium. And the coverage that works well for your spouse may not necessarily be the best fit for your healthcare needs.

Before automatically enrolling - or renewing - take a closer look at your options.

Weeks Insurance Group can help you compare spousal employer coverage with other health insurance options and better understand the potential costs and benefits.

You may want to explore your options if:

Adding you to your spouse’s employer plan is expensive
Your spouse’s employer contributes little toward dependent coverage
The plan has a high deductible or out-of-pocket costs
Your preferred doctors or healthcare providers aren't in-network
The available coverage doesn't fit your healthcare needs
Your spouse recently started a new job
You've recently lost your own employer-sponsored coverage
You're approaching Open Enrollment and want to compare your options

Our Partners

You Don’t Necessarily Have to Be on the Same Health Insurance Plan.

Many couples assume that getting married—or having access to a spouse’s employer plan - means both spouses need to be covered under the same policy.

That isn't necessarily the case.

Depending on your circumstances, one spouse may remain on an employer-sponsored plan while the other obtains different coverage.

And under current Marketplace rules, affordability is assessed differently for an employee versus eligible family members. For 2027, job-based coverage is generally considered affordable when the applicable premium is below 10.22% of household income and the plan meets minimum-value requirements. For the employee, the calculation uses self-only coverage; for household members offered coverage through that job, it considers the cost of covering the household.

That distinction can matter.

Could You Have a More Affordable Option?

One of the biggest questions we hear is:

“If I can get insurance through my spouse’s employer, can I still get my own health insurance?”

Potentially, yes. You can purchase Marketplace coverage even when employer coverage is available, but whether you qualify for premium tax credits depends on factors including the affordability and minimum value of the employer coverage, household income, and other eligibility rules.

That's why it makes sense to compare before you decide.

We can help you look at:

Monthly Premiums
What will it actually cost to add you to your spouse’s plan compared with other available options?

Deductibles & Out-of-Pocket Costs
A lower monthly premium isn't always the least expensive option overall.

Doctors & Provider Networks
Does the plan include the doctors, specialists, hospitals, and healthcare providers you prefer?

Prescription Coverage
How well does each option cover medications you regularly use?

Marketplace Eligibility
Could your household circumstances make you eligible for Marketplace savings?

Overall Coverage
Which option provides the balance of coverage and cost that makes the most sense for you?

Recently Lost Your Own Health Insurance?

Losing employer-sponsored health coverage can change your options.

If you recently lost coverage because of a job change or other qualifying event, you may have opportunities to enroll in different coverage outside the normal annual Open Enrollment period.

Instead of automatically moving onto your spouse’s plan, it may be worth comparing the alternatives first.

Let James help you understand what options may be available.
